In this years’ seminar series line up hosted by the virtual Décor & Design exhibition, it was exciting to see Victoria Redshaw , Head Futurist at Scarlet Opus in the UK, give us their forecast for Design Trends 2021.
By analysing the political, environmental, social, and economical environment, (and of course the affects of COVID) - Victoria presented 4 trends that follow as a fallout. Homes have now become a focus of emotional value, now needing to satisfy many functions and challenges.
The 4 trends put forward were; Earthbound, Belonging, Force for Good and Nurture.
In today’s feature we are explore the trend – Earthbound. I absolutely love what this trend signifies and am excited about the aesthetics that result.
Earthbound makes reference to how technology is so very present in our lives and that we seek to re-calibrate by connecting more to the earth – a shift away from the Space age and a re-connection to our home place – Earth. This trend indicates our yearning to re-balance our lives by looking within and self-reflecting, looking at balance, calm and wellness. The spaces this trend seeks to create have a human feel, with use of materials that are soothing and calming – connecting us back to earth. We are undertaking a process of de-cluttering our minds and our homes.
The style could be noted as rustic & minimal – almost caveman like with furniture taking on a chunky form. Natural materials, handmade materials, chunky shapes and metallics are present. Colours are earthy & warm; mud browns (e.g.: terracotta) and sandy neutrals dominate. Patterns are indigenous inspired and tribal like. The trend seeks to work collaboratively & ethically with communities – here in Australia an emphasis is on working in particular with the indigenous community.
I was deeply lost in taking inspiration from the Earthbound trend and came up with my interpretation. If you love the products displayed on the mood board for Earthbound and would like to purchase – follow the links below;
